    Article summary

The Comgate payment gateway offers the PayPal payment method. This is an international online payment system that allows people and businesses to send and receive payments over the internet. It is an easy and secure way to transfer money between users without having to share financial information such as credit card numbers or bank accounts.

    PayPal from the customer's perspective

A customer who chooses PayPal as a payment method on Comgate must have a personal PayPal account. If they do not have an account and want to use this method, the system will prompt them to create an account (free of charge). This will then be linked to their bank account or credit card. For subsequent payments, they simply log into their account and make a transaction at the gateway using the PayPal payment method.

    PayPal from a merchant's perspective

To integrate with the Comgate payment gateway, it is necessary to have a Business account with PayPal. Integration with a Personal PayPal account is not possible.

All transactions take place exclusively in PayPal and no third parties enter the process. Once the customer makes a purchase via PayPal, the funds are transferred from the customer's account to the merchant's business account. The merchant can transfer the funds to their bank account or keep them in the PayPal account for further transactions.

If you wish to use this method, Comgate will ensure that it is integrated into your payment gateway.

PayPal integration into the payment gateway

To activate the PayPal method, you need to link your PayPal Business account with the Comgate payment gateway.

To integrate the PayPal payment method into the Comgate payment gateway, the merchant must create an application in the PayPal Developer Dashboard within their PayPal Business account.

For the created application, PayPal generates login credentials – Client ID and Secret – which are used to link the payment gateway with the PayPal account. These details then need to be provided to our customer support to complete the integration.

How to obtain login credentials (Client ID and Secret)

    1. Set up a PayPal Business account.

    2. Log in to the PayPal Developer Dashboard.

    3. Open the Apps & Credentials section or tab (a list of applications will appear in the REST API apps section).

    4. At the top of the page, there are two environments: Sandbox (testing environment) and Live (production environment).

      1. Switch to the production environment (Live).

    5. Create an application by clicking the Create button.

    6. Enter the application name (e.g., Comgate integration or your e-shop name).

    7. Click Create App.

    8. Once the application is created, its details will be displayed, including the Client ID and Secret.

      1. To view the Secret, click the Show button (eye icon).

    9. Copy the Client ID and Secret.

    10. Send the Client ID and Secret to Comgate customer support, who will activate PayPal.

    Client ID and Secret format

The Client ID and Secret do not have a fixed expiration date. They remain valid until they are reset or deleted in the PayPal account.

    Characteristics:

    • A long alphanumeric string

    • No spaces

    • The details are unique to each PayPal account and created application

    Example:

    • Client ID: AbCDefGh1234567890abcdefghijklmnopQRSTUVWXyz

    • Secret: EJd93kd82KDjS93kd92KDJd9s2KDJd92kd92kd9DJ

What to do if PayPal is not working

If PayPal payments are not working on the payment gateway, the most common cause is an incorrect Client ID or Secret. PayPal cannot verify them as valid and will not allow a PayPal payment to be created.

How to identify a credential issue

A problem may be indicated, for example, if:

    • The customer is not redirected to PayPal after clicking the button.

    • The payment gateway returns an error when attempting to create a payment.

    Troubleshooting

In case of a problem, please first check:

    • Whether you sent the correct Client ID to Comgate support.

    • Whether you sent the correct Secret to Comgate support.

    • That the details provided belong to the production (Live) account, not the testing (Sandbox) account.

    • That there are no spaces between the characters in the provided details.

Subsequently, contact our customer support and provide:

    • The shop URL and Company ID (IČO).

    • The shop connection identifier (found in your Client Portal under Shop Settings).

    • Information that this is a PayPal error.

    • The time of the payment attempt and the Comgate payment ID.

    • A screenshot of the error, if available.

    • The Client ID and Secret from the application in the PayPal Developer Dashboard.

Our support will then verify the correctness of the integration settings.

The problem may also be caused by an incorrect specification of the PayPal method when creating a payment via API by the merchant, or the merchant may not have this payment method active in the Comgate system.

You can check your currently enabled payment methods in your client account at portal.comgate.cz in the section Integration → Shop Settings → Payment methods tab, or contact Comgate customer support for verification.

    Fees

Comgate does not charge any fees for transactions via this method or integration into the payment gateway.

The only fees the merchant pays are those negotiated with PayPal.

    PayPal Transaction Billing

Transactions are managed by the merchant himself in his PayPal business account, where funds from customers are transferred already reduced by fees (according to the PayPal price list).

The Comgate client portal only displays the incoming PayPal transactions (tab Payments → Customer Payments) and it is not possible to work with them here. They are not included in Comgate's regular billing.

Refunds of these transactions are made by the merchant via their business account (not in the Comgate Client Portal). These refunds are not included in the billing from Comgate.
